Black Overbust Corset

Description

Unfortunately the photos did not come out very well--blurry and unfocused. It's very hard to get an auto-focus to work with matte black fabric, even though we used my friend's veeery nice camera.

I drafted the pattern myself, which took over three pages of calculations and hours of thinking in 3D because I have no pattern drafting or even really any sewing experience. This is the second garment I've ever made, but it fits surprisingly well. It is made from two layers of black cotton duck, which was ruined in the wash--the very tough fabric creased and the dye was rubbed off at the creases, leaving white marks all over the fabric that look a bit like I didn't bother to wipe off the chalk. I plan to cover this corset with swarovski flatbacks in either a fleur de lis pattern, or just over the white chalk markings, which actually make an interesting organic pattern.

Some people have said they wear corsets because it makes them feel more feminine, or stronger, or sexier, or more confident. Some people do it because they are in an almost master-mistress relationship with the garment (Mr. Pearl, who also believes there is a "corset moment" when tightlacing, and that the person who laces one into the corset owns the one wearing the corset). I've even heard that some people wear corsets because they have aspergers and love the feeling of constriction, which is absolutely fascinating. Me? I don't know. I just... love it. I love wearing a corset. Maybe because there is an overwhelmingly joyous feeling when one removes the corset after wearing it for more than twelve hours at a 5" reduction, or maybe just because I've loved the experience of constriction, especially at the waist, for a long time, but I love it. I can't stop thinking about sewing and designing! I'm currently working on two more corset commissions.

Measurements are 36", 25", 35". 24 pieces of boning, including fusion coated extra strength boning at the underbusk. Self made binding, and 9 yards of lacing. The photo doesn't quite do it justice. I don't know, maybe, 100 or more hours as usual? My next corsets should be much faster, as I had to go through 4 mockups and much learning.

Try macro? usually it's a picture of a flower... and better lighting, more direct.
